- Capabilities | Development of management and decision-making tools based on modeling and simulated scenariosCoastal & Environmental Protection Maritime Spatial Planning Ecosystem Services & Governance Aquaculture Fisheries
Development of space-specific tools for assessment, management and decision-making by modeling the impacts of present and possible future environmental scenarios (pollution, climate change, etc.) on oceanographic conditions, biodiversity distribution, physiological response or fisheries and aquaculture performance.
- Software | AMIGO2: Advanced Modelling and Identification using Global Optimization, version 2
AMIGO2 is a MATLAB-based multiplatform toolbox designed to solve mathematical optimization problems at the core of systems biology, within the context of parametric model identification, the underlying hypothesis for model development and the optimal control of biological systems to synthetically achieve the desired behavior.

- Capabilities | Advanced -omics applied to marine organisms
Studies on the structure of the genome of marine organisms, including gene mapping, DNA sequencing and how the complete set of RNA transcripts is produced by the genome and affected by development, diseases, or environmental factors conditioning the phenotype and particularly proteomics and metabolomics, always applying the most advanced techniques (ATAC-seq, MethylCap-Seq, RNA-seq, recombinant DNA technology, knockin and knockout CRISPR/Cas9, enhancer detector (ZED),Tol2 kit and BAC transgenic technologies, etc.).
- Capabilities | Development of integrated plant-wide control and optimization for food industry
Multi-scale modeling for flexible decision-making and optimization of complex processes (i.e., sterilization) based on safety and quality control of food products using non-invasive techniques (software sensors, etc).
- Capabilities | Development of integrated multi-trophic aquaculture systems
Optimization of multitrophic culture systems in open and closed aquaculture infrastructures, ranging from recirculation fish-macroalgae aquaculture systems, with special focus on the effect of the resultant microbiomes on animal welfare, to the adjustment of low-trophic multi-species aquaculture systems in the ocean.
- Software | PREMER: fast network inference with information theory
PREMER (Parallel Reverse Engineering with Mutual information & Entropy Reduction) is an open-source, multi-platform software tool for inferring network structures from data using information-theoretic measures. While this general purpose tool has been developed with biological networks in mind, it can be applied to other areas.

- Prototype | MUSSEL-HFNI: high-frequency non-invasive (HFNI) low-cost biosensor for aquaculture monitoring
Device to monitor the physiological status of up to 64 bivalves in their culture system in real time.
The monitoring system is based on the analysis of micro-movements of bivalves related to valve opening (valvometry). This technique has been confirmed by recent studies as a very promising technique to detect harmful algal blooms or ocean acidification episodes.
The prototype is being adapted to increase its portability and autonomy. For further information, please contact us by e-mail.
- Software | ACOmi: Ant Colony Optimization for mixed integer nonlinear programming problems (MINLPs)
The method is described in Schlater, M., J. A. Egea, J. R. Banga (2009) Extended ant colony optimization for non-convex mixed integer nonlinear programming. Computers & Operations Research 36(7): 2217-2229.
Software available upon request (email us if interested).
- Capabilities | Pathogen incidence and risk assessment
Pathogen detection and identification in wild and farmed animals, as well as in seafood products. Evaluation of the relationship between pathogen incidence and various environmental and physiological aspects to provide risk assessments for target pathogens.
