Scientific Culture, Ocean Literacy and Engagement with Society
IIM-CSIC staff teach this course aimed at pre-doctoral researchers of the Doctoral Program in Marine Sciences, Technology and Management (DOMAR)
From May 22 to 29, 2023, personnel from the Mariñas Research Institute - CSIC together with the UCC of the CSIC Delegation in Galicia, the Galicia Sur Health Research Institute and the University of Vigo will teach the course "Scientific culture, ocean literacy and commitment to society" aimed at pre-doctoral researchers and researchers from the PhD Program in Marine Sciences, Technology and Management of the same university.
Ocean Culture is defined as knowing and understanding the influence of the ocean on society and its influence on the ocean. At present it is considered a long way to advance sustainable production practices, develop strong public marine policies, promote more responsible citizenship and encourage young people to launch a career in the blue economy and marine sciences.
The promotion of scientific culture, and in particular of ocean literacy, from all entities in charge of marine research and management is essential to increase the social impact of these studies, as well as to produce socially responsible research that allows meeting the Objectives United Nations Sustainable Development.
On behalf of the IIM, Xosé Pintado Valverde, vice-director of Scientific Culture at the IIM-CSIC, Gabriela Ojeda Romano, head of the IIM's UCC+I, Jaime Amaro Blanco, head of the Communications area at the UCC+I will participate in the course. of the IIM.
Luisa Martínez Lorenzo, head of the UCC of the CSIC Delegation in Galicia, Leonor Parcero, head of the UCC of the Galicia Sur Health Research Institute and Patricia Quintas Pérez will also participate.
