Inmunología y Genómica
Profundizar en la comprensión de los procesos relacionados con las enfermedades, sistemas inmunitarios y expresión génica de los organismos marinos es esencial para el desarrollo de un sector acuícola más sostenible y rentable.
Además, puede ofrecer a la sociedad un amplio cuerpo de conocimiento y un conjunto de tecnologías que pueden incluso tener impacto sobre la salud humana.
Los estudios llevados a cabo por el grupo de Inmunología y Genómica del IIM-CSIC se centran en las bases moleculares de la respuesta inmunitaria frente a los patógenos en pescados y moluscos de acuicultura, su transcriptómica y su proteómica, prestando especial atención a las respuestas inmunitarias innatas en estos organismos y a sus potenciales aplicaciones biotecnológicas en salud animal y humana, así como en la optimización de procesos en acuicultura.
El grupo busca identificar genes que puedan utilizarse como biomarcadores en procesos de selección genética, además de para mejorar la respuesta inmunitaria mediante el uso de inmunoestimulantes y vacunas. Su principal objeto de investigación son los mecanismos clave de la respuesta inmunitaria innata, como los péptidos antimicrobianos (PAM), los procesos inflamatorios relacionados con las citoquinas o las actividades antivíricas y antibacterianas, para cuyo estudio emplean técnicas inmunológicas, microbiológicas, de biología molecular y de bioquímica de proteínas. El uso del pez cebra (Danio rerio) para estudiar tanto las enfermedades de los peces como las humanas es también una característica principal del trabajo de investigación del grupo.
En colaboración con otros servicios científicos y tecnológicos (ver más abajo), el grupo es responsable del Laboratorio Nacional de Referencia de Enfermedades de Moluscos Bivalvos (LNREMB) que lleva a cabo su labor en el marco de este grupo de investigación. En 2011, recibió la acreditación conforme a la norma ISO 17025 para diversas técnicas diagnósticas de patógenos en moluscos. Este servicio responde directamente al Ministerio de Agricultura, Pesca y Alimentación (MAPA).
